As a human, Melinda has no special powers or enhancements. She is, however, a formidable woman in her own right. Not only is she exceptionally skilled in several forms or martial arts, she is also very proficient with a range of weapons, including blades and guns.

She is fluent in both English and Chinese, and can also speak a range of other languages such as French, Italian, Spanish, German and Russian, though she is not fluent in these.

Additionally, Melinda is also a highly skilled pilot, and has managed to pull off some impressive manoeuvres on more than one occasion.

Having had a mother who worked for the CIA, Melinda knew perhaps better than most what to expect when she joined SHIELD. This, coupled with her own experiences, have formed her into a great warrior not only in battle, but in terms of strategics as well.

Despite her infamous stoic facade, Melinda feels very deeply and cares a lot about the people close to her. She is also very perceptive when it comes to how other people are feeling, especially the people who are important to her such as her team members who she sees as family.

Melinda struggles to deal with overly strong or painful emotions. She doesn’t like to talk about what’s bothering her, and will instead shut the world and everyone around her out, and withdraw into herself. Alternatively, she may head into the training room where she can take her emotions out on a punch bag, but when this happens she can sometimes overexert herself unless someone is brave enough to stop her.

She is very hard on herself and will blame herself for the things that go wrong in her life. Even when she realistically knows that whatever happened wasn’t her fault, or that there was no other call she could have made, there is a part of her which will always tell her things could have been different.

Despite the warmth she feels towards those closest to her, she can come across cold and unfeeling towards other people. She has a hard time trusting others, especially since Bahrain.

She is fiercely protective of the people she cares about. Whilst this in itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it can on occasions cause her to act rashly and without weighing up the potential consequences of her actions.

  • Despite being proficient with a gun, Melinda prefers hand-to-hand combat owing to what happened in Bahrain
  • Known for her stoic facade, giving away little to nothing about how she feels at any given time.
  • When stressed or upset, she will often clench her jaw a little. This is one of the only signs of emotion she ever displays to most people.
  • When lost in thought, it is not uncommon for her to run the pad of her thumb across the tops of her finger nails
  • Avoids physical contact except with those she trusts most of all as a result of what happened in Bahrain

Freeform here!

Melinda was born and raised in Pittsburgh. Her mom, Lian, was a CIA agent and so was often away from home, meaning that much of Melinda’s childhood was spent with just her dad, William. She didn’t mind, and though Lian was never overly affectionate Melinda never once doubted her mother’s love for her.

At age seven, Melinda took up ice skating. She stumbled and fell many times, but she would always get back up and try again. For five years she lived and breathed ice skating, until she finally gave it up and focused her efforts on martial arts.

Though her mom would have liked Melinda to follow in her footsteps and join the CIA, Melinda wanted to forge her own path and make her own name for herself, so she instead enrolled at SHIELD’s Operations Academy. After graduating, she became a specialist and was eventually partnered with Phil Coulson, who would go on to become her best friend and someone she would do anything for.

Everything went wrong for Melinda in 2008, when what was meant to be a straightforward mission in Bahrain went south. That day was the day that Melinda had to make the hardest call of her life, and one that changed her irrevocably. Gone was the woman who had been quiet yet warm and bubbly with an air of mischief around her. Now she was a shadow of her former self, still quiet but now in a cold and reserved way. She was heralded a hero and dubbed ‘The Cavalry’ by the agents she saved that day, the name gradually spreading throughout SHIELD until everyone knew of the infamous warrior and what she had done, albeit over time the story became more elaborate and less concrete. Yet in Melinda’s eyes, she was very far from a hero.

Unable to come to terms with that she had done, Melinda withdrew into herself and pushed everyone, including her husband, Andrew, away. She resigned from field work and took up a desk job in Administration where she stayed until 2013 when she was convinced to join Phil Coulson’s new team.

Initially she agreed to join only to be the pilot, insisting that she wasn’t going to go back into the field. It wasn’t long before she relented, however, finding it too hard to sit back and watch as her teammates went out on missions whilst she stayed behind to run back end.

Unfortunately it wasn’t long after this that SHIELD fell, but Melinda was among those who banded together to establish the CAD and she assisted as they sought out allies. She continues to do what she can to protect the world from the new threats. SHIELD may be no more, but the values live on.
