The Lorebook
Alien Evil
• Who are the villains of Civil Requiem?
Short Answer: Human and alien.

Details: The villains of Civil Requiem consist of a smattering of human threats and a unique alien subculture designed specifically for the storyline of the site. For that reason, we have two defined "evils" to look over. The human threats are designed for use on Civil Requiem and may not reflect the MCU directly. While they will be frequent appearances during site events, members are encouraged to use the evils of the site at their leisure for the sake of plotting, development and thread advancement.

• What's in the shadows?
Short Answer: Predators of an alien nature, among other things.

Details: When a portal opened up in Manhattan to the other side of space - to a pocket of Dark Space - it ripped a hole in the fabric of reality that made it easier for creatures of other dimensions to pass through. These creatures may be from other galaxies, other times, other realms - but whatever they are and wherever they come from, they are hungry and extremely dangerous.

• Have any of these creatures been identified?
Short Answer: Yes.

Details: There are five defined species that are known of for certain, photographed and catalogued by NYPD's patrols and various victims since the Incident took place. Only two of them have been killed and brought in for study at the C.A.D. and there are at least three that remain unidentified.

• Yikes. Do these things have names?
Short Answer: Yes.

Details: The five catalogued creatures are as follows:

  • V1557
Called 'split heads' or 'venus body traps' by locals.
  • V1668
Called 'shadow men' or 'the real slenders' by locals.
  • V2294
Called 'ash hags' or 'burnt bogeys' by locals.
  • V2531
Called 'grey men' or 'martians' by locals.
  • V2725
Called 'hell hounds' or 'devil dogs' by locals.
  • The three uncatalogued strains have no C.A.D. identifiers, but are known to locals as the "darklings" the "crawling ones" and the "ghostly angels" respectively. None have been captured definitively on film, but descriptions remain steady and consistent on all three anomalies.

• Can I get more detail on these?
Short Answer: Absolutely.

Details: The creatures will be described in depth in the following posts; this is more of a F.A.Q. for light reading, but those of you interested in the full lore are happily invited to continue on.

• What does the V & number stand for?
Short Answer: Virus + Identification Code.

Details: The creatures are being treated as viral, though no known cases of alien sickness has been reported, the C.A.D. is seeking to neutralize these creatures or contain them much like one would with a virus, so it felt less alarming to them than 'Alien & Identifying Number' because well - it's still kind of hard to stomach aliens.

• Why do these things sound like urban legends?
Short Answer: Because reasons.

Details: Local New York tends to be a bit more to the point and blunt about these things, because a short description gets the point across better than a V and some numbers when yelling why you need to goddamn run for it.

They are actually designed to sound like urban legends because cause New York is very much alone in its ProMutant, ProVigilante, ProAnyone Enhanced stance, but its basically:

We grant you legal asylum, in turn, you fight this bullshit.

While the rest of the world is pretending its not happening - but sometimes even New York has to ask - you can't be serious, right?

• Can my characters fight these things?
Short Answer: Within reason.

Details: The powers and (known) weaknesses of each anomaly strain will be listed in the next post, but all members are encouraged to fight aliens at their leisure. These are unlimited NPCs so you're welcome to take on as many as you feel you and your partner(s) can feasibly handle in a thread.

• Can my characters study these things?
Short Answer: Within reason.

Details: Capturing them will not be easy but otherwise this, too, is a free for all. If your character has reasonable access to C.A.D. headquarters or the ability to capture an anomaly and study it they are welcome to do so. They are even welcome to make discoveries - however whether or not those discoveries become site canon will be at staff discretion.

• Can I play one?
Short Answer: Uh, no.

Details: We would like to keep the characters at Civil Requiem human for the time being - though this may be subject to change in a faraway future, for no, its a no.

• Can I design new ones?
Short Answer: Perhaps during a future event.

Details: We intend to keep the creation of Civil Requiem's lore as organic as possible for staff and characters. Right now we would like our characters to learn more about the current anomaly strains before going into building more, but if you are interested in expanding the lore, we absolutely suggest having a character with the C.A.D. working to discover things that can be added to our site descriptions of present strains.

The Lorebook
Alien Evil Expansion Pack
• V1557: Split Heads / Venus Body Traps
Classification:
Quadruped.

Physical Description:
Greyhound-shaped creatures the size of Arabian horses with blackish grey, leathery skin. Their most notable characteristic is that their head splits open at the center and opens sideways to capture prey with jaws tough enough to break bodies in two.

Maximum Speed:
90 mph.

Bulletproof:
Yes.

Known Weaknesses:
Electricity, Plasma, and Muon Beams cause the V1557 to disintegrate. Fire will deter it and lower bullet resistance. Once dead, the V1557 disintegrates.

Known Locations:
Central Park, Prospect Park.

Activity Period:
Between 0100 - 0430 hours.

Danger To Humans:
243 confirmed deaths, over 1000 injuries from V1557 attacks since May 19, 2012. No reports of nonviolent interaction with this strain have been recorded. None have been captured for study.

• V1668: Shadow Men / Real Slenders
Classification:
Bipedal.

Physical Description:
Tall humanoids of roughly six to seven feet in height, black bodies with translucent white hands and exceptionally long fingers. Necks and heads are also white. No discernable eyes or mouths. Contact with their hands causes immediate cardiac arrest.

Maximum Speed:
75 mph.

Bulletproof:
No.

Known Weaknesses:
Anything that can kill a human will at least incapacitate a shadow man for a few minutes. The creature may vanish and reappear on a recently shifted street if injured. Disintigrates if exposed to direct UV light. Nothing appears to actually kill them beyond UV rays thus far, only incapacitate and force to relocate.

Known Locations:
Central Park, Stark Tower, Brooklyn

Activity Period:
Between 0000 - 0330 hours only.

Danger To Humans:
Roughly 800 reported deaths and injuries from V1668 attacks since May 19, 2012. No reports of nonviolent interaction with this strain have been recorded. None have been captured for study.

• V2294: Ash Hags / Burnt Bogeys
Classification:
Bipedal.

Physical Description:
Look vaguely like the burned carcasses of Chitauri soldiers, lacking armor and making distinctly mournful sounds, almost like they may be in pain.

Maximum Speed:
40 mph.

Bulletproof:
No.

Known Weaknesses:
Fire, Electricity, Extreme cerebral trauma, Extreme spinal trauma.

Known Locations:
Manhattan Centric

Activity Period:
Between 2300-0400 hours.

Danger To Humans:
125 confirmed deaths and 792 injuries from V2294 attacks since May 19, 2012. No reports of nonviolent interaction with this strain have been recorded. None have been captured for study.

• V2531: Grey Men / Martians
Classification:
Bipedal.

Physical Description:
So classical Roswell it took seventeen attacks before NYPD determined it was not a hoax. These creatures are humanoid with three fingers, and greyish green skin that is leathery and cool to the touch. They have skeletal frames and their rib cages are pronounced and obvious. They have triangular heads and wide, fly-like eyes.

Maximum Speed:
15 mph.

Bulletproof:
No.

Known Weaknesses:
Anything that kills a human turns a Grey Man to ashes.

Known Locations:
All of New York.

Activity Period:
Between 2300-0500 hours.

Danger To Humans:
18 confirmed deaths and 67 injuries from V2531 attacks since May 19, 2012. No reports of nonviolent interaction with this strain have been recorded outside of questionable witnesses. One has been captured for study.

• V2725: Hell Hounds / Devil Dogs
Classification:
Quadruped.

Physical Description:
Ashen dogs about German Shepard in size with a predilection for bursting into flame. Some have horns resembling those of a ram, some have antlers more like an elk. Both are known to use these as weapons against people, for butting or goreing.

Maximum Speed:
45 mph.

Bulletproof:
Everywhere but the eye socket. An eye socket shot will cause a burst of blue flame and the creature will vanish.

Known Weaknesses:
Thanks to a lady in Harlem, we now know water with Sunlight soap will make them melt. Regular water appears to have no effect unless the dog is on fire, which will cause the fire to go out.

While a bullet won't work, beheading will cause the creature to disintegrate into ash, as will managing to sever it in half. Thanks for those details, Hell's Kitchen! If badly wounded the dogs tend to disappear, though are noted again with scars matching the injury description some days later.

Eerily tame around children unless they perceive a threat to the child; interestingly 100% of surviving victims of Hell Hounds report having interacted in some capacity with a Grey Man before the attack.

Known Locations:
Manhattan Centric.

Activity Period:
24 hours. No known rest period.

Danger To Humans:
93 confirmed deaths and over 1600 injuries from V2725 attacks since May 19, 2012. Hundreds of reports of nonviolent interactions have been recorded. The V2725 strain seems particularly protective of children and is known to stalk them and attack perceived adult threats to their safety. One has been captured for study.

• Unclassified: Darklings
Classification:
Bipedal.

Physical Description:
Child-sized and shaped opaque shadows with no discernable faces or features. They are black and smooth, reportedly cool and soft to the touch.

Maximum Speed:
Unknown.

Bulletproof:
Reportedly.

Known Weaknesses:
Direct light causes them to lose shape and disappear like smoke.

Known Locations:
Reported all throughout Manhattan and Queens. Some sightings on Staten Island.

Activity Period:
Between 2300-0600 hours.

Danger To Humans:
No reported deaths or injuries since May 19, 2012. Occasional reports of nonviolent interaction. None have been captured for study.

• Unclassified: Crawling Ones
Classification:
Uncertain.

Physical Description:
Vaguely humanoid in shape, bent backwards to move on all fours much like a crab walk. Flesh is mottled greens, purples and yellows, like a full body, three day old bruise. Shambling, twitchy motions during non aggressive periods. Fast and smooth motions when instigating an attack. Entire stomach / back region opens into a mouth and a long tongue extends to capture and poison prey.

Maximum Speed:
20 mph.

Bulletproof:
No. Fatal shots cause this creature to flop over like a spider and met into a puddle of goop.

Known Weaknesses:
Anything that would kill a human will kill a crawly, resulting in a murky goop puddle once dead.

Known Locations:
All of New York, usually spotted after street shifts.

Activity Period:
Between 2300-0330 hours.

Danger To Humans:
Over 300 confirmed deaths and 4200 injuries from crawly attacks since May 19, 2012. No reports of nonviolent interaction with this strain have been recorded. None have been captured for study.

• Unclassified: Ghostly Angels
Classification:
Bipedal.

Physical Description:
Blue humanoids with horns and strange white markings embedded in their skin, typically noted with white or black hair. Reportedly ice cold to the touch. Sometimes transparent, other times solid. Reports are inconsistent in this regard.

Maximum Speed:
Unknown.

Bulletproof:
Unknown.

Known Weaknesses:
Angel sightings never last more than 10-20 seconds and have yet to be reported as violent. No attempts to attack them have resulted in any reports to definitively answer this.

Known Locations:
All of New York, usually spotted after street shifts.

Activity Period:
24 hours. No known rest periods.

Danger To Humans:
No reported deaths or injuries since May 19, 2012. Hundreds of reports of nonviolent interaction. The angels reportedly warn people of dangers, particularly of lurking Crawlers or Ash Hags in the area. None have been captured for study.
